Looking for a pad south of the river, Peckham and Dulwich may be your top choices but there is another location that’s been hailed as the hidden gem of South London.

Nestled between trendy Peckham and genteel Dulwich- it’s easy to overlook Nunhead the south-east London neighbourhood (which is coming into its own) has a lively social scene all of its own though.

The unassuming suburb has been voted on the top places to live according to The Times earlier this year.

With a good balance of green spaces and a strong sense of community spirit, Nunhead is a corner of London you should consider living in.

Allegedly named after a nun who was beheaded during the Reformation, this part of SE15 was perhaps best known for its grand Victorian cemetery with views of St Paul’s Cathedral.

It seems to have undergone a revival in recent years though attracting a mixture of arty types and students from Goldsmiths, University of London, in nearby New Cross, as well as families priced out of Dulwich.

The neighbourhood is now much in-demand for its period properties and great sense of community. There was recently a crowdfunding initiative to revive Peckham Lido, five minutes away on Peckham Rye common.

Nunhead has a lively social scene all of its own though and offers a good balance for those looking for a close-knit urban village that’s up and coming, but not too fast-paced.

The open spaces of Peckham Rye Park and Common made up of a restored Victorian Park and a historic common provide a peaceful refuge.

There are also ornamental gardens, flowing streams, woodland and a lake, with a popular café, skatepark, playground, outdoor gym, making this a community hub all year round.

Nunhead station is in Zone 2 and on the mainline to London Blackfriars (17 minutes) or London Victoria (18 minutes),

while faster and more frequent trains (including the Overground Tube) go from Peckham Rye station (with trains to London Bridge from 11 minutes). It is also well placed for cycling routes.
