Police search South London after ‘a number of people’ caught with knives

9

Police have been granted stop and search powers overnight in Brixton and Camberwell after ‘a number of people’ were caught with knives.

A Section 60 order has been put in place for an area bounded by Camberwell New Road, Denmark Hill, Dulwich Road, Brixton Water Lane, Effra Road and Brixton Road until 7am tomorrow (November 5).

Lambeth Police explained: “This is after a number of people were detained in possession of knives.”

A Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 gives police the right to search people without reasonable grounds.

This can only happen in a defined area at a specific time when a senior officer believes there is a possibility of serious violence, or weapons are involved.
