South London Oscar-winning studio that made 1917 to get huge expansion

The expansion of an Oscar-winning film studio in South West London has been given the go-ahead.

Twickenham Film Studios is London’s oldest film studio and has played host to countless classics including The Italian Job, War Horse, Bohemian Rhapsody, Baby Driver, and 1917.

Developer General Projects say the plans will future-proof the two acre site to create a hybrid of film studios and production facilities alongside new amenities and a creative hub.

The current 100-year-old studio sits at 105,000 sq ft and will be extended by approximately 19,000 sq ft across the site.

It will bring 60 new jobs to the already 1,000 people working there and is hoped to add £2.5 million to the local economy.

Twickenham Film Studios was given planning permission by Richmond Council’s planning committee on November 1.

The Italian Job, War Horse and Bohemian Rhapsody are just some of the films produced at the studios

Speaking of the approved plans, Jacob Loftus CEO of General Projects, says: “Our work constantly seeks to find opportunities to support the arts and culture sector, so working on a project like Twickenham Film Studios is truly exciting.

“With its rich history and heritage, our collective focus is to future-proof this incredible facility – through careful expansion, enhancing public access and delivering a benchmark creative resource for the next generation of content creators”
