Manchester United tactical change vs Tottenham fixed their two biggest problems

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have feared the idea that at some point at the gleaming Spurs’ Stadium vitriol would rain down on the manager from the stands.

This was the first time Manchester United had played here in front of fans and the imposing South Stand, holding 17,500 supporters in a single tier, is an imposing sight.

And during the second half in North London the chants began. “You don’t know what you’re doing”, quickly followed by “Ole’s at the wheel”. Only this time it was the Tottenham fans accusing Nuno Espirito Santo of being out his depth and after a week in which Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester City fans have mocked the man steering United at the moment, this time it was the away end reclaiming the song as their own.

This 3-0 win might only be a stay of execution given the damage done to Solskjaer’s tenure last week, and it should be caveated with the fact that Spurs were abject, but to respond in the manner they did was hugely impressive for United and their beleaguered boss.
