No clear motive ever established

Mr Lavery, 59, was killed on October 16, 2020, after being assaulted by Beckley at his home off Reddown Road, Coulsdon.

Police and the ambulance service were called to the scene at 9.27pm, following reports of a man seriously injured.

They discovered Mr Lavery, who had suffered head injuries and stab wounds.

He was pronounced dead shortly after 10pm that night.

Beckley was located and arrested near the scene and taken into custody.

During an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command, it was established that Beckley had attacked Mr Lavery in a random attack and that the two were not previously known to each other.

Detectives suspected that Beckley was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the attack and no clear motive was ever established for Mr Lavery’s murder.

Another man was also assaulted, as well as a police officer who responded to the scene.

A special post-mortem revealed the cause of Mr Lavery’s death to be blunt force trauma and stab wounds.

After sentencing Beckley, the judge praised the responding officers who fought to save Mr Lavery’s life at the scene, as well as the investigating team for their investigation.

Detective Sergeant Jason Crinnion, of Specialist Crime South Area, said: “Beckley is a dangerous and violent offender and will now serve a substantial amount of time in prison following this horrendous crime.

“Michael was no threat at all that day. Beckley’s attack was random and violent and left Michael’s family devastated as a result.”
