Redcar nurse up for excellence award after hard work during the pandemic

A Redcar nurse is up for an excellence award after unknowingly being put forward by her team.

Vickie Peters, who works for Cygnet Health Care in Redcar, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Clinical Nurse Manager Award based on her “excellence in senior leadership in the sector.”

The Social Care Leadership Awards are designed to recognise excellence in leadership in the social care sector, and this year will be particularly poignant with the pandemic having shed light on the needs of strong leadership more than ever.

In a statement from Cygnet Health Care, Vicky’s hard work during the pandemic is praised.

“Based in Redcar, Vickie joined Cygnet Health Care in 2019. Having worked as a learning disability nurse both in the NHS and private healthcare settings, she has 22 years’ experience working in the health and social care sector.

“As National Practice Development Lead in Learning Disability and Autism at Cygnet Health Care, she provides support and training to ensure the services meet the multifaceted needs of the service users.

“During the pandemic, Vickie’s leadership around infection prevention control meant services across Cygnet had consistent and up-to-date information about keeping service users as safe and protected as possible.”

Speaking about her nomination, Vickie said: “I was very happy and excited when I found out I had been nominated. It came as a shock because I didn’t know anyone had put my name forward.

“I’ve had a great sense of satisfaction working with people with learning disabilities and autism, seeing their quality of life improved. It is a challenging profession but there is also a wide range of opportunities for people to advance their careers as well.

“The pandemic has not been easy in terms of providing the right support which the services might need remotely. We have avoided visiting services in person during the pandemic but obviously service user’s needs don’t change. I have been quite flexible and adaptable over the pandemic to provide what was needed at the right times.”

Vickie will join other nominated health care workers at The Social Care Leadership Awards gala which will take place on October 27 in London.
