COVID hospitalisations have risen sharply across East London with cases doubling in some hospitals.
New figures from Barts Health and Barking, Havering and Redbridge University (BHRUT) NHS trusts show the number of people with coronavirus in hospitals rose in the last week.
Barts Health trust runs five hospitals across London – St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Newham Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone, Mile End Hospital, and The Royal London Hospital.
Cases fell steadily in these hospitals between August and October, but have increased as COVID-19 grows rapidly across the UK.
On October 5, Barts Health had just 85 COVID-positive patients in its hospitals, but this figure has jumped up to 110 as of October 21.
The trust said that 30 of these patients were being treated in intensive care or with extra oxygen, and added that 12 new patients had been admitted to its hospitals in the previous 24 hours.
Figures from BHRU Trust tell a similar story, with the number of its COVID patients almost doubling in a week.
The trust runs King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford, where there were 34 coronavirus patients on October 12.
However, by October 20 this figure had increased to 61, with 12 COVID patients being treated in intensive care in the two hospitals.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1964 people with COVID have died at Barts Health hospitals while 1705 have died at BHRUT hospitals.
