This converted pie and mash shop is peak East London

This former pie and mash shop turned live/work space in east London’s Homerton is packed with vintage utility vibes and contemporary touches.

The Hackney property was renovated in 2000 to a design that honours its past life as J. Gooding’s pie ‘n’ mash” shop. It retains its original tiled interior with red clay floor tiles and is set behind its old shop façade, complete with retro signage and frosted glazing. Now the three-bedroom home is on sale for £1.050m with Mr and Mrs Clarke.

The conversion’s main living room/work space lies in the old shop and has walls of crisp white tiles, with accents of emerald green, and antique metal bracing on the ceiling. There’s also a wood burner, wall mounted shelving filled with vinyl records and vintage furnishings, which add a cosy dimension. Everything feels light and bright thanks to its three recessed roof lights.

Its low-level kitchen feels little changed from the days when it was used to make pies and flows out onto a walled courtyard garden, filled with greenery. Other new additions include a new minimalist staircase, splashes of green hues, cork floor tiles, and modern timber-framed windows.
