Wood Green live: The Mall shopping centre evacuated after ‘suspect package’ found inside WH Smith

A shopping centre in North London has been evacuated by police after the discovery of a suspect package.

Officers were called just after 2pm today (October 19) to Wood Green Shopping City, High Road, N22.

Shoppers in The Mall, Wood Green were escorted from the building this afternoon (Tuesday, October 19) and some local roads were closed.

The Mall’s Twitter account said police evacuated the shopping centre after the discovery of a “possible suspect package in the vicinity”, with a staff member confirming the package to be in WH Smith.

The Mall tweeted: “The Police have ordered the precautionary evacuation of The Mall following the discovery of a possible suspect package in the vicinity.

“The emergency services are in control of the situation and we will update our social channels and website soon.”

Pictures on social media show a cordon in place, with shoppers unclear as to the reason behind the evacuation.

One witness said: “The police have evacuated The Mall in Wood Green (including me) and blocked off the High Road in front of it. No further information at this time.”

However, shortly after 4pm the incident was stood down and the package deemed non-suspicious. The Mall has now reopened.
