The Hollywood film crew for the new Willy Wonka origin movie starring Timothée Chalamet have been spotted in South London today.

The Warner Bros production team could be seen at the Rivoli Ballroom in Crofton Park, Lewisham, on Tuesday (October 19) with caravans, a lorry, and a food van all parked up on Brockley Road.

The Crofton Park Tavern and St Hilda’s Church were also both closed during filming.

An inside source told MyLondon that big name stars Chalamet, Olivia Colman, and Rowan Atkinson would not be on set but Great British Bake Off host Matt Lucas might be making an appearance.

According to the source they are filming for a musical scene involving around 150 extras.

The Rivoli Ballroom is one of the last remaining intact 1950’s style ballroom left in London and it is often used for filming, including Marvel’s The Avengers, Tom Hardy’s gangster flick Legend, and BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Call Me By Your Name star Chalamet, 25, will follow in the footsteps of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp as he takes on the role of Willy Wonka in a film that plans to explore the eccentric chocolatier’s formative years.

Chalamet released a sneak preview of his character, wearing the iconic tophat and burgundy blazer, many are already suggesting the role will take a darker turn akin to a Batman origin story.

The new film will go beyond the existing story based on Roald Dahl’s famous children’s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, instead exploring the “vivid, mythical beginnings of the imaginative young inventor before he becomes the renowned scrumdiddlyumptious Mozart of chocolate”.

The film will also star one of it’s writers in Horrible History star Simon Farnaby, and Oscar nominated actor Sally Hawkins.

The film will be directed by Paddington’s Paul King and produced by Harry Potter’s David Heyman, with the planned release date set for 2023.

Last month many of the stars were spotted in Dorset as they filmed a snow scene in Lyme Regis, Chalamet could be seen sitting on top of a bus.

The Cobb harbour was transformed into a wintry set on October 11 as actors were seen appearing in man made snow.
