Police dismiss rumours that Imam stabbed to death at East London mosque

The Metropolitan Police have dismissed rumours on social media that an Imam has been stabbed to death at an East London mosque.

Concerns were raised after an alleged incident took place at Barking Mosque on Ilford Lane in the early hours of Saturday morning, which is currently being investigated by the police.

Twitter account Ilford South posted: “Serious incident outside barking park at the entrance of Ilford Lane. Report to follow.”

The Met said the confusion may have come from a different incident that occurred in Ilford on Saturday morning.

A spokesperson from the Met said: “Police were called to Elgin Road, Ilford at 7.27am on Saturday, October 16 following reports that a 16-year-old male had sustained a head injury as a result of an assault.

“Officers attended with London Ambulance Service paramedics. The male was taken to an East London hospital for treatment and we await an update on his condition.

“Inquiries established that the assault took place at the entrance to Barking Park.

“A crime scene in place with an area cordoned off. This includes Ilford Lane from the junction with Victoria Road to the junction with Tanner Street.”
