Frank Lampard claim made by former Chelsea star amid next Newcastle manager rumours

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot has admitted he wanted Frank Lampard to keep his job at Stamford Bridge.

Blues legend Lampard lost his job in January 2021 after 18 months in charge, with the club in the ninth position in the Premier League at the time.

Consequently, Thomas Tuchel has since come in and exceeded expectations, winning the Champions League and sitting top of the Premier League ahead of the return from the international break.

The German’s achievements so far in SW6 mean Marina Granovskaia and co’s decision looks a smart one when emotions are taken out of the matter.

Despite his reluctance to admit that the west London hierarchy’s decision was the right one, Melchiot did say that Tuchel in comparison to Lampard has given the players more clarity on what their individual roles are within the team.

“When Thomas Tuchel took the job, we were saying Chelsea are under pressure,” former Blue Melchiot told BBC Radio 5 Live..

“Did I want to see the change? No, I wanted Frank Lampard to keep his job. Has Tuchel turned things round? Yes.

“It looks like every individual knows what to do and that is the difference. He is on track right now and Chelsea are playing some great football.”

With the club record addition of the 2020/21 Serie A MVP winner Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes doesn’t believe it is enough to sustain a Premier League title challenge against Man City and Liverpool come May 2022.

“I think Chelsea have got the manager to challenge. I’m just not sure, not convinced there’s enough goals in the team,” Scholes said on Sky Sports’ Overlap show.

“I think Romelu Lukaku will score goals but are there enough people around him to score goals. I’m not sure Timo Werner will. When he plays for Germany he scores every game, for Chelsea he misses a lot of chances.

“I also don’t think Chelsea are great defensively. [Antonio] Rudiger has been really good but other than that, Thiago Silva is 36, he’s not going to play every game.

“[Andreas] Christensen is a young player. In the middle of your pitch Chelsea are alright. But I’m not sure Chelsea will score enough goals and defensively be good enough.”
