BBC Graham Norton Show: Jodie Whittaker’s Hollywood actor husband and forgotten role in Doctors

The first ever woman to play Doctor Who, Jodie Whittaker is not afraid to stand out from the crowd – or so it would seem.

The 39-year-old actress from West Yorkshire now resides in London with her husband and child, who she has purposefully kept out of the spotlight.

Married to a Hollywood star, there’s more to the thirteenth Doctor than meets the eye.

Jodie has been married to her husband Christian Contreras for nearly 13 years and share a daughter together, who is now five or six years old.

The pair married in 2008 after initially meeting at the Guildhall School of Music. Christian appeared in American TV series Soulmates in 2020 and starred alongside Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty.

If you’re not a Doctor Who fan, you might recognise Jodie Whittaker from somewhere else. She has starred in the iconic film St Trinians as Beverly and even appeared on an episode of Doctors back in 2006.

She also starred as Beth Latimer in TV detective series Broadchurch between 2013 and 2017.

Jodie made history when became the first women to play the world’s most famous time traveller four years ago.

Speaking to the BBC in 2017, she revealed that it was ‘very hard’ to keep her role a secret – even from her family. She even revealed that she had a codename for her upcoming role, which she took over from previous Time Lord Peter Capaldi.

She said: “In my home, and with my agent, it was The Clooney. Because to me and my husband, George is an iconic guy. And we thought, what’s a really famous iconic name? It was just fitting.”

She added that she embroiled herself in a ‘whole world of lies’ after only being allowed to tell her husband about the exciting news.

Jodie is known for staying away from social media and keeping her private life, private, having only posted on Instagram three times in the last year.

But fans were excited to see Jodie post a cryptic clue on her Instagram feed four days ago, sharing a Doctor Who poster which says ‘If you have spotted any spaceships or something unusual, call the doctor on 0800 678 3110.”

Commenting underneath, one fan said: “Jodie you are a kick-ass doctor, can’t wait to see where the series goes this season!”

Another added: “I love Doctor Who so excited for the new season big respect to Jodie legend serious legend.”

A third chimed in after calling the number written on the post saying: “Called it and it’s a fun little message with Jodie saying the Doctor thing of “there’s a big bad coming and we need all of the help to stop it’.”

Jodie is set to appear on The BBC Graham Norton show on Friday night (October 15) and will undoubtedly be hinting at what is to come for the Doctor in new episodes being released at the start of next year.
