Holidays near London: Beautiful city 48 minutes away named one of the best small cities in the world

Venture just under an hour outside of London and you will find yourself in a stunning city with a famous reputation.

The city of Cambridge is most well-known for being the home of one of the best universities in the world, the University of Cambridge, but it now also has another accolade after it was named one of the ten best small cities in the world.

Ranked seventh by Conde Nast Traveller, Cambridge won out when it came to activities, restaurants and friendliness.

The city has plenty of attractions to entertain visitors, starting with the 31 university colleges which can be found tucked away down medieval cobbled streets dotted around the city.

Many of them date back hundreds of years and allow visitors to enter, wander around the ancient quads, and attend evensongs in their chapels.

An activity almost synonymous with Cambridge is punting on the River Cam, best enjoyed in the warmer months of the year.

Punts are shallow boats that are propelled along by someone pushing an enormous pole: feel free to have a go yourself if you’re feeling brave or pay a little extra to have a pro do it for you.

The views along the river are stunning and will take you right through the centre of town, giving you amazing views of the city that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to see, including the backs of Trinity and King’s College.

If you’re after more culture, you may be interested in paying the Fitzwilliam Museum a visit to see their collection of art and artefacts from all over the world.

When all the activity and walking around gets too tiring, you might like to rest up and refuel at one of Cambridge’s many delightful eating spots.

For a smart meal, you could try brasserie Parker’s Tavern, which serves delicious British classics reinterpreted with a twist.

If you’d like something a bit more low-key, it’s worth popping into Fitzbillies for one of their famous Chelsea buns, supposedly ‘the world’s stickiest’, and a cup of tea.

Alternatively, if you’re visiting during term time and would like to absorb the bustling atmosphere of the student population, you may like to pop into The Eagle for a pint or two.

One of the oldest pubs in Cambridge, The Eagle is said to date from the 14th century and was the place where scientists Francis Crick and James Watson announced they had ‘found the secret of life’ when they discovered DNA in 1953.

For other shops and cafés to visit, Mill Road is popular for its range of independent cafés, restaurants, and shops.

The city is filled with green spaces, including the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, for a summer picnic or walk around.

Just outside the city centre you can visit Grantchester, the setting of the ITV drama of the same name.

You can enjoy a sit down by the river, or try an afternoon tea at the nearby café.

The historic Market Square is one of the rare ones in the country that is open seven days a week, with traders selling fresh food, souvenirs, clothing and accessories, and other items.
