Loaded sub-machine gun and revolver found in abandoned south London car

A loaded sub-machine gun and a revolver were found in an abandoned car in south London.

An Operation Viper team, along with a Neighbourhood Tasking Team, attended Sackville Estate in Streatham  yesterday (Thursday October 7)  to conduct searches in the area, where several vehicles were identified as having been abandoned.

Operation Viper is part of the Met Police’s efforts to address the increases in gun crime in London.

After forcing entry to one vehicle, the team found a loaded Scorpion sub-machine fun containing half a magazine of live ammunition beneath the rear passenger seat of the car.

They also discovered a pistol-style revolver with four rounds of ammunition concealed in the rear pocket of the driver’s seat.

Both weapons were taken to be examined.

Viper team member Detective Inspector Richard Mullan said: “The Viper teams works alongside Basic Command Units and Specialist Crime teams to make it harder for criminals to engage in gun crime.

“This seizure is another great example of our dedication to remove guns from the streets and reduce violence.”

In another vehicle, officers found several live shotgun cartridges hidden in a sock.
