David Moyes makes Kurt Zouma France admission after Didier Deschamps snub

Kurt Zouma will not be taking part in this week’s UEFA Nations League semi-final for France after being dropped for the international set-up by Didier Deschamps.

The West Ham defender has 10 international caps to his name and has been a regular in Deschamps squads since being recalled after the 2018 World Cup.

Zouma was a member of the France set-up for Euro 2020 and started in the past two international matches for his country against Finland and Ukraine.

The news of his absence from the Nations League squad was therefore somewhat of a surprise considering the impressive start he has made to life at West Ham.

Zouma is now a fixture in David Moyes’ first XI rather than simply playing a squad role, as he did at Chelsea. Despite now getting regular football and thriving for his new side, Deschamps has overlooked the 26-year-old on this occasion.

football.london asked Moyes if he thought Zouma’s snub by Deschamps was a symptom of a big club bias but the manager rejected this notion.

“I would hope not,” Moyes said. “We are trying to challenge the top teams because I want to be right there at the top and those players can show they are good enough to play for the international teams.”

Zouma might not have done enough to impress Deschamps but Moyes is delighted with the start the centre-back has made to his Hammers career.

“Kurt has played really really well for us,” he added. “He’s been a colossus in the games he has played so his form will not go unnoticed.

“I think it is a Nations League game so maybe that is a reason for it. Maybe it is the quality of the centre-halves France have got.

“When I signed him I knew we were taking a French international centre-half [and they] have an incredible quality of centre-halves and he has not disappointed us from what we have seen so far.”

The one positive from Zouma’s France exclusion is the defender gets a two-week break before returning to action with the Hammers against Everton on Sunday, October 17.
