London Underground driver reveals Winston Churchill’s bunker is part of the Tube network and other secrets

Most of us take the tube every day and would say we’re pretty familiar with how it runs.

But a tube driver has revealed some of the more obscure secrets that you probably don’t even think about when you step onto the tube for your sweaty commute.

In a Reddit thread, the user TrainOperator took questions from other users about the secrets they’ve learned during their years as a Tube driver.

They said : “Churchill’s bunker from World War II (whilst the war rooms were being built) is part of the underground network.”

The site they’re referring to can be found at Down Street station in Mayfair.

It’s now a disused station, which is why it may not sound familiar, but it’s where Churchill took refuge during the Blitz.

It still has some of the original signage and you can even sit on Churchill’s toilet.

It used to be a staff secret, but the Transport Museum then opened it up to guided tours.

It was only an open station between 1907 to 1932.

Thousands of people flocked to Reddit to get answered to the things that drive Londoners mad including when the Central Line heat in the summer will be dealt with.

The one-word response of “money” comes as no surprise to anyone.

One Redditor asked whether they had seen any paranormal activity whilst driving the train which the driver confirmed he had with a cryptic “yes” and no further detail.

Spooky.

Ever wonder what it’s actually like to drive a train? Wonder no more.

It’s apparently very boring and you’re taught a number of techniques to keep your concentration which involves constantly changing positions between stops.

There are apparently secret toilets at most stations as well but are strictly only for the use of Transport for London (TfL) staff.

For all the monotony of driving the trains, they certainly make up for it in the weirdness they encounter.

When asked what the stupidest thing they’ve seen a passenger do, they said: “There was one a while back who chained her suitcase to a bench at a central London tube station on the platform so she could go shopping before getting her plane.

“Caused a massive security alert.”

When asked about whether there’s anything nice passengers can do to be more considerate, they said: “If I re-open the doors for you I always appreciate a wave, I can see you (hence why I re-opened them).”

When asked about letting people into their cab, they said it was a security risk, and they have a secret list of people who are allowed in that they cannot share.
