Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham: Spurs accused of ‘looking lazy’ in north London derby

4

Journalist Paul Brown has slammed Tottenham for their display in the north London derby by saying it’s the worse he’s seen the club for a long time.

What happened against Arsenal?

After two wretched performances and results against Crystal Palace and Chelsea in recent weeks, Nuno Espirito Santo needed a huge response from his side to avoid losing three Premier League games on the spin for the first time since February and only second time since November 2012.

However, what Tottenham served up against Mikel Arteta’s men was an absolute horror show in every sense of the word.

Spurs conceded three times in a 22-minute blitz from Arsenal, with goals from Emile Smith-Rowe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka all but sealing the points inside the opening 35 minutes.

An improved second-half, albeit when the Gunners had dropped off, saw Tottenham pull one back courtesy of Heung Min Son’s late strike, but it wasn’t enough to avoid their winless September continuing.

Despite their showing in the second 45 minutes, Brown heavily criticised Spurs’ woeful showing at the Emirates.

What did Brown say?

When asked his thoughts on the performance, he said: “That’s as bad as I’ve seen Spurs for a long time. They were completely overrun, looked lazy all over the park and didn’t look engaged at all.”

What next for Santo?

Santo is less than three months into his reign, but it already feels like his days might be numbered.

On a positive note, Mauricio Pochettino found himself in a similar situation when he had only won three times in his opening nine Premier League matches before dropping certain players and the form of Harry Kane saw his fortunes soon turn around.

Did Tottenham Hotspur sign Moussa Sissoko on transfer deadline day in 2016?

Yes

No

Santo’s style of football has been criticised heavily, although Harry Kane’s transfer saga and early-season form hasn’t helped, whilst his lack of help from the board in the recent window certainly hasn’t aided the Portuguese’s chances of succeeding, with Spurs desperately short in the attacking areas.

Things can change quickly, and if Tottenham beat Aston Villa and Newcastle, their league position will be looking far healthier. But Santo needs to get a tune out of certain players, or he could be out of a job before he’s even got going.
