Tooting shooting live: Updates as police rush to leisure centre after man in 30s shot

A man in his 30s was shot in the leg and rushed to hospital in South London.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene on Garratt Lane, Tooting, after first being called shortly before 1pm today (Monday, September 27).

Witnesses reported hearing “loud bangs” they originally thought was a car backfiring. They then said police stormed the scene near The Gym and cordoned off the road.

A man was found suffering from gunshot injuries and he was taken to a South London hospital where police have said his condition is not life-threatening.

Police were seen going door-to-door speaking to residents, with police dogs also at the scene.

One witness who did not want to be named told My London: “I just want to get the hell out of here if I’m honest, I’m done (with London).”

“I just want to get the hell out of here if I’m honest,” says local resident

A local resident who witnessed the incident has told My London of her desire to leave the area.

The woman, who did not want to be named, was at the scene when the man in his 30s was shot in the leg.

She said: “I worry for my son. I can’t believe this has happened in Tooting.

“I just want to get the hell out of here if I’m honest. I’m done.

“When it’s literally on your doorstep it’s like a sign telling you to go.”

Police reveal victim in his 30s was shot in the leg in new statement

The police have released a new statement regarding the shooting in Tooting this afternoon.

The statement reads: “Police were called at 12:59hrs on Monday, 27 September to reports of a shooting in Garrett Lane, Tooting.

“Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service and found a man in his 30s with a gunshot injury to his leg. He was taken to a south London hospital where his condition was assessed as non-life-threatening.

“Enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 3512/27Sep. To remain anonymous contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

‘I’m done with London’

An witness who didn’t want to be named said: “It was very very quick.

“I would say young because the guy who got shot looked like he was in his later twenties early thirties

“I just want to get the hell out of here if I’m honest I’m done (out of London).

“When it’s literally on your doorstep it’s like a sign telling you to go.”

‘I said have you been shot, he said yeah in my leg’

A witness, who wishes to remain anonymous said: “I worry for my son.

“I can’t believe this has happened in Tooting.

“I saw a guy in black:.. he came out the side road.

“I believe it was targeted. I was walking and I heard the first bang and obviously everyone was like huh. I thought it was a car as you do and then someone said it was a gun.

“There was three guys, the main guy the shooter that’s stepped forward and put his arm out and went to shoot another guy.

“I didn’t see the other guy until he was on the floor and a passerby was helping him.

“I said have you been shot, he said yeah in my leg”

One witness said: “I heard gun shots prior to and then someone sped off on a moped.”

Garratt Lane like a ‘ghost town’

A resident, who lives by the scene, said: “Heard lots of car backfiring, or what I thought. Next thing I know ambulance and police here downstairs near The Gym in Tooting.

“I knew it, it definitely sounded like gunshots. Now police cordoning off area in Garratt Lane.”

They continued: “Garratt Lane like a ghost town now.”
