London petrol stations: Asda limits customers to £30 refill amid panic-buying crisis

Asda stores in London are limiting customers to £30 petrol refills at stations amid the panic-buying crisis.

The move follows an identical decision by EG Group, which is responsible for 341 stations across the country. The group said the decision would ensure all its customers “have a fair chance to refuel”.

The £30 cap does not apply to HGV drivers and emergency services – and staff have been pulled in to manage queues as drivers line up and down streets to buy fuel.

“I’m at Asda Bugsby way now, smallish queues and managed well by staff. £30 limit,” one Londoner wrote in a Facebook group for Greenwich residents.

The rule changes enforced by EG Group affect Esso, BP and Tesco petrol stations.

A Downing Street spokesman said UK had “ample” fuel stocks, adding there were “no shortages ” of petrol in the country.

“Like countries around the world we are suffering from a temporary Covid-related shortage of drivers needed to move supplies around the country,” a spokesperson added.

“We’re looking at temporary measures to avoid any immediate problems, but any measures we introduce will be very strictly time-limited.

“We are moving to a high-wage, high-skilled economy and businesses will need to adapt with more investment in recruitment and training to provide long-term resilience.”
