Tim Sherwood makes Arsenal and Tottenham transfer comparison ahead of North London Derby

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will battle it out for north London bragging rights when they lock horns at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Mikel Arteta’s side come into the clash off the back of successive victories over Norwich City and Burnley, whilst Spurs have failed to win any of their last four matches in normal time.

If the Gunners secure their third straight win they would move level on points with their arch rivals despite having a difficult start in the Premier League.

Sherwood, who made over appearances as a player for Spurs before last managing them in 2014, criticised both Arsenal and his former club’s recruitment over the past few years.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, he said: “I think Arsenal’s best players over the past few seasons have been academy players. I think they’ve brought in average players who have blocked pathways for their kids.

“No-one else wants the players they’re going for and that’s the same with Tottenham. They are the only ones in the market for that type of player.

“I think it then comes up to the manager as there’s a disconnect between the recruitment team and the manager, there isn’t a clear identity.

“If you’ve got a clear playing identity and recruitment process, it’s easy to put players into that. I think there’s disconnect at both Arsenal and Tottenham, they’re bringing players in and stockpiling them.

“Then the manager has to get the best out of them but they don’t fit into the philosophy.

“I can’t tell who will finish higher between the two, either sixth or seventh.”

Arsenal were busy in the summer market, signing the likes of Martin Odegaard, Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale for big-money fees, whilst the likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Joe Willock and David Luiz all departed the club.

Spurs, on the other hand, managed to keep Harry Kane and did strengthen as Emerson Royal, Christian Romero and Bryan Gill joined, but Erik Lamela ended his eight-year spell in north London.

Although both sides have had mixed starts, it’s still a highly-anticipated encounter as the pair try to earn a much-needed victory against their rivals.
