Two North East landmarks have been named among the 10 most Instagrammed ‘man-made wonders’ of the UK.

Hadrian’s Wall and The Angel of the North came in seventh and eighth, respectively, on the list compiled by digital marketing firm Extreme to celebrate World Tourism Day on September 27.

Topping the list is the ever-mysterious Neolithic Stonehenge monument, having secured over 790,000 tags from Instagrammers, making it the most popular man-made wonder in the country for snap-happy social media users.

Cornwall’s botanical favourite, Eden Project, ranks at four, closely followed by a run of historical favourites comprising York Minster, Bath’s Roman Baths and Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland.

Following Gateshead’s Angel of the North is the awe-inspiring Salisbury Cathedral and Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Just missing out on the top 10 is the Greenwich Observatory in London, as well as 11th-century Lancaster Castle, with its fascinating dark history of crime, execution and role in the witch trials.

Meanwhile the top three most Instagrammed natural wonders of the UK are Loch Ness, Dorset’s Jurassic Coast and Seven Sisters in Sussex.
