Matt, 47, rose to fame in the 1990s after appearing on Shooting Stars, before going on to write and star in hit sketch show Little Britain alongside David Walliams.

These days, Matt has also turned his hand to presenting and has appeared on the iconic baking show The Great British Bake Off since 2020.

Matt is a relatively private person and has kept many intimate details of his personal life away from public view.

Something Matt has opened up about is the heart-breaking loss of his ex-husband Kevin who died in 2009 and the grief he battled with as a result.

Matt entered into a civil partnership with Kevin McGee in 2006, but the couple split up a couple of years later in 2008.

10 months after the divorce, Kevin tragically took his own life after a battle with depression and addiction.

Opening up to his Instagram followers in 2019, Matt spoke about the heart-breaking loss of his ex.

“This is Kevin John McGee, who died ten years ago today. I loved him more than anyone I’ve ever met, and still do. He was so funny and silly and clever and kind and handsome and his smile made my heart soar.

“We were together for nearly six years and he made me the happiest man on the planet. In the end he lost his battle with addiction and depression. I guess some people don’t have the armour for this world.

“I think of him probably a hundred times a day, every day. In truth, I think of little else.”

Matt bravely spoke to the Sunday Times Magazine about dealing with grief: “I think people respond in all different ways to grief.

“I thought I was very conscientious going to a bereavement counsellor and not turning to drink, which I hardly ever do — I probably have six units a year.

“I’m not going to start smoking again, I’m not going to do drugs. But I ended up eating lots and having lots of sex. That was how I responded.”

The Great British Bake Off with Matt Lucas begins tonight on Channel 4 at 8pm.
