BBC Gone Fishing: Paul Whitehouse’s 22 year age gap with partner who was a fan and why they live in separate homes

Comedy actor Paul Whitehouse is a TV legend, starring with Harry Enfield, Vic Reeves, and Hugh Laurie at various points in his 34 year career.

Most recently he has graced our screens with another comedy giant and friend in Bob Mortimer, taking to the water in Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.

The BBC TV show sees the pair tour Britain’s top fishing spots and “talk a lot of nonsense” as Paul tries to help Bob recover from a complex heart disease.

While they occasionally try to catch rare fish, most of the show is spent reminiscing about their childhood, show business, and romance.

Paul, 63, has been with 41-year-old academic Mine Conkbayir since they met when she was 23, a student, and working in a shop.

Mine was a fan of Paul’s when they met, she treasured an autograph her mum brought home after bumping into the star in a supermarket when she was 15.

When they met Mine was working in a health food shop in Islington as she studied for her degree.

Speaking about the start of their relationship, Mine told the Mail Online: “Paul used to come in regularly. I’d try to act unfazed but inside I was bursting. I would buy tickets for his shows and he’d promise to get me backstage.

“There was a bit of banter between us and then a few dates.”

They went out for dinner and Mine took a reluctant Whitehouse to an art gallery. She also got him to come to her college – City and Islington, where she was studying childcare – for a fundraising event.

It was a slow-burn relationship. She remembers: “Paul was understandably scared because of the age gap and his celebrity status – I guess he had to ask himself what I really wanted.”

The couple have a daughter Delilah, yet there is one unusual thing about their relationship TV viewers might not expect.

The couple do not share a home, instead choosing to live close together in North London.
