David Moyes says West Ham can have their own Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Manchester United clash

David Moyes has said he hopes Michail Antonio can emulate Cristiano Ronaldo’s goalscoring exploits ahead of their Manchester United double-header.

Unfortunately for Moyes, Antonio is suspended for the Premier League clash against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team but he will be available for the Carabao Cup tie three days later.

Ronaldo’s return to England has brought ‘another level of excitement’ to the Premier League, according to Moyes, but the Scot is hopeful his team has what it takes to contain the Portuguese.

“Ronaldo’s an unbelievable sort of killer, as far as scoring goals,” Moyes said.

“I hope we can turn Mickey Antonio into a killer of a goalscorer because Ronaldo started as a wide player, and ended up becoming a terrific number nine, so I hope that we can do the same with Mic in the years to come.

“But, Ronaldo is an excellent player, he has brought another level of excitement to the Premier League, and we will do everything we can to keep him quiet.”

When asked how West Ham will deal with Ronaldo’s threat, Moyes preferred to concentrate on his own team rather than commenting on Manchester United.

“We’re a good team. I think we are getting better,” Moyes said following his team’s 2-0 Europa League win over Dinamo Zagreb.

West Ham are unbeaten in five matches this season and go into the Manchester United game off the back of two clean sheets and Moyes is excited at the prospect of facing his former team.

“I’m really looking forward to it because the London Stadium was incredible against Leicester City and against Crystal Palace,” he said.

“I think we have a different West Ham support in the stadium. We’ve got great support behind the team and I think they are seeing a new, more exciting, team as well. So from that point of view, we are hoping for a rocking stadium.”
