Tottenham dealt double injury blow ahead of Chelsea clash as pair hobble off vs Rennes

Tottenham have been handed a double injury blow after forwards Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura came off injured against Rennes.

The Dutch international was on the receiving end of a late challenge before hobbling off with an ankle problem, replaced by tough-tackling midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Bergwijn came off with the scoreline at 1-1, with a Loic Bade own goal giving Spurs the lead before the French side equalised through Flavien Tait.

The 23-year-old has struggled with fitness problems during his time in north London, missing a total of 118 days through injury since joining in January 2020, according to Transfermarkt.

Brazilian frontman Moura then limped off before the hour mark after receiving another hefty challenge from Tait.

It is the latest in a line of injuries suffered by Spurs players, with the likes of Heung-Min Son and Eric Dier both sustaining respective injury woes in recent weeks.

The South Korea international missed last weekend’s bitterly disappointing 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side registered a measly two shots without the 29-year-old’s creativity behind centre-forward Harry Kane.

Meanwhile, Dier suffered a dead leg against the Eagles, keeping him out of the Europa Conference League clash against the aforementioned Rennes.

Spurs will hope the trio will be back in action as soon as possible with two difficult London derbies looming.

The Lillywhites are due to host reigning champions of Europe, Chelsea, on Sunday before travelling to face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on September 26.

Espirito Santo’s side currently sit seventh in the Premier League having won their opening three fixtures 1-0 before the Palace defeat.
