Britain is set to bask in sunshine tomorrow with temperatures reaching up to 71F (22C), after London was lashed by ‘biblical’ downpours that left Tower Bridge underwater during rush hour today.
Heavy showers will clear eastwards overnight, making way for sunny spells and warmer conditions, particularly in northern England, said the Met Office.
The forecast comes in stark contrast to that of today, which saw commuters in London battle flash flooding on their way to work as parts of the North Circular and the Blackwall Tunnel Northern Approach and Underground services including the District Line were left submerged.
Dramatic footage showed buses and cars struggling to get across the landmark bridge, while photos shared by angry Londoners with MailOnline also showed the A41 by Brent Cross shopping centre and Euston Road left in deep rainwater.
The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning stretching for hundreds of miles from London as far north as Hartlepool and said heavy downpours may cause disruption across England throughout the day.
Parts of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also experienced wet weather today, but no warnings were issued for these nations.
Meanwhile, bookmaker Coral makes this month odds on at 1-2 to be the hottest September since records began, predicting temperatures of up to 77F (25C) this weekend.

London: What to do if the road is flooded
Torrential rainfall today carries with it the risk of localised flooding.
The Met Office has reminded motorists that if the road is flooded they should turn around and find another route.
The number one cause of death during flooding is driving through flood water, so the safest advice is to turn back.
The water can also damage your car, with just an egg-cupful of water sucking into your engine possibly leading to severe damage.
Although the water may seem shallow, as little as 30cm of moving water can float your car, potentially carrying it into deeper water from which you may need rescuing.
Much of the UK basked in sweltering sunshine at the start of the month, including Wales which experienced its warmest September night on record, while temperatures in Scotland reached the highest since 1906.
But grey skies and temperatures in the late teens hailed the end of summery weather towards the middle of the month. Cars were captured ploughing through floodwater in central London beneath a blanket of clouds on Tuesday morning.
Today’s temperatures of around 64.4F in London and 59F in Edinburgh will climb to around 69.8F and 64.4F respectively on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
In its forecast for tomorrow, the Met Office said: ‘Low cloud and fog lifting steadily during the morning, then dry for many with sunny spells developing.
‘Showers in the northwest moving eastwards. Warmer than Tuesday, particularly in northern England.’
Meanwhile, temperatures in Cardiff and Belfast are predicted to remain constant at around 64.4F throughout the working week.
Ms Shuttleworth said that the long-range forecast for September is uncertain, but forecasters expect temperatures across the UK to be slightly higher than average for the time of year.
Transport for London (TfL) also indicated that the District Line was not stopping at Mile End due to flooding.
The Met Office issued the yellow weather warning this morning, affecting bus and train services with journey times taking longer and the chance of cancellations.
Drivers were also warned that spray and flooding on roads would make journey times longer with some difficult driving conditions and the chance of road closures.
Referring to today’s weather, a spokesman for the forecasting service earlier said: ‘An area of rain is expected to move northeastwards across much of England on Tuesday, with thunder in a few places.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for large parts of the country today as heavy downpours batter the UK
’15-25mm of rain is likely quite widely with up to 40mm in a few places, leading to some flooding and disruption.
‘However, there is a small chance that this rain will especially intense in a few places with 50-70mm possible, and more significant disruption where this occurs.’
Weather agency MeteoGroup UK said in its forecast for tonight: ‘Rain will continue across northern and eastern England during the evening and will be locally heavy for coastal areas.
‘Overnight will continue to slowly clear from the west to leave most areas dry with clear spells and patches of mist and fog will form. Rain will linger across the north-east to dawn.’
Stella Creasy, Labour MP for Walthamstow, had urged people to report any flooding on the roads as a comment on a Facebook post in the group Walthamstow Life.

Folk pulling out of the meeting I’ve travelled in especially for. Long queue for a taxi. Horrible grumpy people. Of which I am now one’

Meanwhile, Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead said: ‘The sun is going to shine again this weekend and with temperatures set to soar back up towards 86F (30C), this month is now firmly odds on to be our hottest September since records began.’
