London crime: Shocking attacks where criminals have turned on their friends and family

7

Most can remember a time they have had an argument or fallout with even their closest friend.

However, these are often over the most trivial and insignificant of things and matters are resolved quickly.

There are some, though, that have ended up in court and subsequently prison for attacking their friends and family.

Some of these horrific offences were committed due to drugs, petty issues or just in the spur of the moment, but they were all examples of when the red mist descended.

My London has looked back at recent cases where criminals have turned on their family and friends with dire consequences.

Manpreet Singh

Manpreet Singh, 21, has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 12 years

A father-of-two was ‘strangled and stamped on’ by his ex-flatmate before being left lying dead in an alleyway.

Baljit Singh, 37, was murdered in a “sustained and brutal attack” in which he suffered multiple fractures to his neck and ribs on April 25, 2020.

Manpreet Singh, 21, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 12 years after pleading guilty to the killing at Isleworth Crown Court on Wednesday, April 28.

Baljit Singh, 37, was found dead in an alleyway near Hayes train station

The court heard how Manpreet had moved to England from India on a student visa, before being introduced to Baljit through a mutual friend. Baljit assisted Manpreet by providing him with accommodation in Hayes, before the pair fell out following “a trivial argument” when they had both been consuming alcohol.

As a result, Manpreet was living with a friend at a homeless camp in the local area.

The three “met by chance” one evening and spent the night drinking together. However, Manpreet “repeatedly stamped” on Baljit in a “mindless piece of violence” in an alleyway shortly after they left together.

Kaziku Tuwisana and Besnik Berisha

Besnik Berisha and Kaziku Tuwizana were convicted of murder at the Old Bailey

Two men were found guilty of murder after luring two friends to a North London street before killing them after a dispute over a £15,000 debt.

Kaziku Tuwisana, 33, of no fixed address and Besnik Berisha, 43, of Martock Gardens, Friern Barnet were convicted of the murders of Arber Fesko, 30, and Shkelqim Paja, 36, on July 9 following a trial at the Old Bailey.

The court heard how Paja and Berisha had been friends for around three years prior to the murders. However, their friendship had become strained in the last year following a dispute over a sum of money – around £15,000 that Berisha owed to Paja.

On December 18, 2019, Paja raised concerns that Berisha was planning something behind his back, which worried him. The following day the two men arranged to meet after Berisha agreed to pay back the money owed.

Shortly after 8pm two separate witnesses on Courtland Avenue reported seeing a group of men who appeared to be attacking another man. Further along the street, a second man was seen collapsed.

Fesko was found in the boot of a Mercedes at the London Gateway Services on the M1, before Berisha’s body was discovered dumped in Hertfordshire days later.

Kristian Smith

Kristian Smith is yet to be sentenced but has been found guilty

Kristian Smith was jailed for 12 and a half years

A man killed his flatmate and then lived in her Battersea flat for several weeks with her decomposing body.

Kristian Smith, 42 and of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison following a trial at the Old Bailey in January 2020.

The court heard the police was called to 52-year-old Antoinette Donegan’s home address in Este Road on March 7, 2019, after she had not been seen for more than a month.

After receiving no answer at the front door, officers gained entry via a bedroom window and found Antoinette’s body.

The body was in a state of decomposition, indicating it had been there a number of weeks. But there was a significant amount of blood on the floor by her head and on the furniture in the room.

Police still do not know what instigated Smith’s brutal attack on his flatmate.

Carlos Velez

Carlos Velez stabbed his flatmate to death

A man who stabbed his flatmate to death after he falsely accused him of kissing his girlfriend was jailed for 17 years.

Carlos Velez, 20, stabbed 26-year-old David Martinez with a kitchen knife multiple times inside the flat they shared in North Birkbeck Road, Leytonstone on March 6, last year.

Just hours before, David had messaged a cousin about Velez’s possessive behaviour, telling her he was “all crazy and was asking if I had kissed his girlfriend”. He later sent a message to his cousin stating: “I am going to try to go on Friday else I’ll end up dead.”

Shortly before the killing, Velez had slapped his girlfriend during an argument where he demanded to find out more about a conversation she had previously had with the victim in the kitchen while he had been doing his laundry. Later she was to find him stabbing David in the kitchen.

David managed to flee the flat but collapsed outside on the pavement. Paramedics were unable to save him. He had suffered a number of stab wounds to his head, thighs, shoulders, chest and hands.

Dwight ‘Junior’ Freeman

MMA star Jahreau Shepherd was stabbed to death by his half-brother

A teenager fatally stabbed his MMA star brother with a “two-foot Samurai sword” while he was out celebrating his birthday at a South London park.

Jahreau Shepherd, 30, screamed for help as he was chased before being stabbed in front of horrified members of the public and friends close to Venn Park, Kennington, on July 11 last year.

His younger brother Dwight ‘Junior’ Freeman, 19, appeared at the Old Bailey on August 9 to be sentenced for manslaughter by diminished responsibility and wounding with intent in connection with stabbing a second man at the party.

The court heard Jahreau was “very tough” on the teenager and “sometimes physically imposing” in an attempt to get him to behave properly and stop using cannabis.

Freeman was found to be mentally unwell and diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, which was undiagnosed at the time of the attack and, in their assessment, the reason why he carried out the frenzied assault.

He was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order.

Ivan Griffin

Ivan Griffin, 24, told his victim to drink his blood

A man murdered his fiancée calling it the “Devil’s work”.

Ivan Griffin stabbed his partner Sabrina Mullings through the heart in the early hours of the morning on March 13, 2017 – just hours after they became engaged.

The killer demanded his 38-year-old victim “drink his blood” as she lay dying in the flat they shared in South London.

Griffin said he “killed her because he loved her”.

The killer was detained by police screaming “I am Jesus” and said he was “like a puppet in a string” during what has been branded as a “horrendous” attack by the judge – the Recorder of London Nicolas Hilliard QC.

At the Old Bailey, Judge Hilliard dismissed the supernatural claims and told Griffin “you intended to kill her”.

He was jailed for life with a minimum term of 16 years.
