ITV This Morning: Holly Willoughby in tears as Kate Garraway reveals more about husband Derek’s ‘painful’ Covid recovery

Kate Garraway, 54, is a popular TV presenter and journalist, known for her work on ITV’s breakfast programme Good Morning Britain .

Over the past year, Kate’s husband Derek has been dealing with the effects of Covid-19.

Derek was diagnosed with Covid in March 2020, and was tragically affected by a number of medical complications as a result of the virus which left him in a critical condition for many months.

Earlier today (Thursday, September 9) Kate appeared on ITV’s This Morning to chat to presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about her National Television Awards nomination.

The nomination is for the documentary Finding Derek, which tells the story of Derek’s battle to overcome coronavirus.

Kate Garraway has been caring for her sick husband for over a year

Kate has explained that her husband’s recovery is a slow and painful process, which will continue for a while to come.

Kate discussed the tragic reality of attending the NTA ceremony alone and spending her wedding anniversary without her husband Derek back in full health.

On This Morning earlier today, Kate said: “He is home now, which makes a huge difference. So that’s the change since the documentary.

“His progress is tough if I’m honest, it feels like there is no change, it feels painfully slow. He still has very little movement. He still can’t talk really, you can’t have a conversation.

“He does seem and, I think others believe now, that he does understand everything so that’s fantastic. You feel like he can understand even though he can’t get stuff back so must be a nightmare for him.”

Kate went on to say that Derek is still unable to speak and sleeps for most of the day.

Holly and Phillip were visibly moved by the details of Derek’s condition, and Holly was tearful to hear this heart-breaking update.
