London crime: Masked thieves filmed breaking into England Rugby star’s car in Central London

7

Masked thieves have been filmed breaking into an England Rugby star’s car in Central London.

At shortly before 5.10pm yesterday (September 8) the two brazen thugs broke into rugby player Ellis Genge’s Range Rover in Berkeley Square in Mayfair and stole a bag.

Footage of them in the act has been circulating on social media and appears to have been captured by someone in a nearby building on a mobile phone.

In the footage, two masked people on e-bikes can be seen breaking the glass of the back window of the Range Rover

The thieves work quickly and grab a blue backpack from inside the car, then cycle away.

Genge, 26, shared the footage on his own Instagram page, stating: “Broad day light my car just been done. Middle of Berkeley Square London.

“Probably no chance but if you do see them about do me a favour.” He then included a phone emoji followed by a police officer emoji, indicating that the public should call the police if they see the thieves.

Twitter users were quick to express their outrage on the behalf. One user said: “Did they just take a child’s pack bag?! Pathetic,” and another described the brazen thieves as “vermin”.

Other users were less surprised that Genge’s car had been targeted, with one saying: “Can’t believe in this day and age, that people still leave bags on show in cars. You’re just asking for your car to be broken into.”

Another said: “Leave something in a vehicle on show and they will target you. Just as they all target expensive cars to steal because most owners don’t bother to use a krooklok outside their own homes.”

Ellis is a well-known English rugby union player for Leicester Tigers in the Premiership.

He made his international debut for England in 2016 and plays as a prop forward.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “At 17:09hrs on Wednesday, 8 September, police received a report of theft after a bag was reportedly stolen from a car in Berkeley Street, Mayfair.

“Officers have made initial contact with the informant and are carrying out enquiries.”
