London school to teach pupils how to socialise to help them settle in after Covid

A west London school is offering its students sessions to help them learn to socialise again and settle back in to school after challenges from the pandemic.

Oak Wood school in Hillingdon will offer Year 7s joining the school a support package to help them after nearly a year and a half of Covid restrictions.

According to ONS data (Office for National Statistics), between 7 May and 7 June 2020, 87 per cent of parents said a child in their household had been home schooled because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The sessions will involve sitting together as a year group during lunchtimes, bonding activities during tutor group and extracurricular club taster classes for pupils to make like-minded friends.

Daniel Cowling, head teacher of Oak Wood school, said it was “crucial” to have the socialisation sessions to help young people’s development which had been impacted during the pandemic.

Students will be given socialisation sessions to help them get to grip with their surroundings

Daniel said: “At this moment it is really hard to tell exactly what the impact will be of 18 months of lockdowns and restrictions.

We do know that a huge part of a young person’s development is the crucial socialisation skills you receive when you are mixing with your peers and teachers.

“Starting secondary school is daunting at the best of times but on the back of a pandemic is even tougher.

The headteacher went on to highlight the importance of the initiative as losing loved ones over the last year had affected children’s mental health.

He said: “There will be many who have experienced personal trauma with the loss of a loved one while others will have had their mental health affected.

“As a school and a community, we must do all we can to help our young people get back on the right track, both emotionally, social and academically.

“It is also clear that we are not completely out of the woods with Covid so we must prepare our students for what may come next.”
