A London-area woman in her 30s who died of COVID-19 was unvaccinated against the virus, public-health officials tell The London Free Press.

The death, announced Friday, is the second in as many days in London and surrounding Middlesex County, coming on the heels of a man in his 50s who was also unvaccinated. There were two local deaths in all of August, per unofficial LFP records.

The London-area death toll throughout the COVID-19 pandemic is now 235.

Friday, officials with the Middlesex-London Health Unit recorded 18 new cases of the virus. There have now been 13,448 local cases, and 219 are currently active.

The local vaccination effort continues. As of Friday, 82.8 per cent of eligible (12-and-older) residents had received one vaccine shot, and 75.8 per cent had received the recommended two shots.

The London Health Sciences Centre tally for people hospitalized there with COVID-19 dropped to eight, down from 13 earlier this week.

Ontario reported 807 more cases of COVID-19 Friday and seven added deaths. Health Minister Christine Elliott says 628 of the new diagnoses – roughly 78  per cent – are in people who are not fully vaccinated, or whose vaccination status isn’t known.

She says 326 people are hospitalized with the virus, and only 34 of them are fully vaccinated.
