A teenager has been airlifted to hospital after being smashed in the head with a hammer on a busy high street in east London.

Police officers were called to Leyton High Street just before 6pm on Tuesday to reports of males fighting and one armed with a hammer.

No arrests have been made and the condition of the patient remains unclear.

A London Ambulance Service has confirmed the person treated at the scene was a teenager.

A spokesperson said: “We were called at 5.50pm today (31 August) to reports of an assault on Leyton High Road.

“We sent an ambulance crew, an incident response officer, and a clinical team leader. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.

“A teenager was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital as a priority.”

In a tweet, Waltham Forest MPS said: “We are on scene in Leyton High Street after call at 17:49hrs to reports of men fighting & one armed with a hammer.

“One man found with head injury – he has been taken to hospital. We await an assessment of his condition.

“No arrests at this stage – crime scene & road closures in place & enquiries ongoing.”

Witnesses are being urged to call 101 referencing CAD 5515/31 Aug.

The A112 High Road Leyton is blocked near Leyton Park Road and Coronation Gardens, according to the Daily Express.

Waltham Forest councillor Shabana Dhedhi also tweeted a photo of an air ambulance landing near the scene in Drapers Field.

“Something bad has happened in Leyton – air ambulance landed in Drapers fields never seen anything like it everyone stunned – stabbing near Coronation gardens,” she wrote.

Police officers, meanwhile, were pictured standing behind a cordon outside Leyton underground station following the incident.

A witness, who had to get off the bus he was on following the incident, told My London he saw the victim “bleeding on the ground”.

The news platform also reports the Met said there were no reports of a stabbing in the area despite rumours circulating online.
