London clubs handed huge boost as transfer supremo looks set to leave Liverpool

Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have been handed a huge boost as Premier League rivals Liverpool look set to part ways with their sporting director Michael Edwards.

Edwards has overseen a hugely successful period with the Reds and has largely been responsible for the shrewd acquisitions of the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson in recent years.

However, the transfer guru, who has been the club’s sporting director since November 2016, looks set to leave Anfield next summer, according to The Athletic.

Edwards departure could be excellent news for the aforementioned London clubs, who will hope that the Reds’ loss is their gain.

Liverpool were renowned for poor transfer dealings before the Englishman’s arrival, sanctioning £35million on Andy Carroll, £22.5million on Lazar Markovic and £20.5million on Stewart Downing, all of who failed to live up to their hefty price tags.

Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal will be hoping their Premier League rivals will make similar mistakes when Edwards departs, something that could help the latter two leapfrog the Reds in the table if previous mistakes are repeated by Liverpool’s hierarchy.

In fact, Spurs previously employed Edwards, with chairman Daniel Levy entrusting the former Portsmouth analyst with reshaping the Lillywhites analysis department, helping the north Londoners achieve Champions League qualification for the first time in 2010 before departing for Anfield shortly after.

The Blues, who played out a 1-1 draw with Klopp’s men on Saturday, will be happy to see Edwards leave their title rivals as the two clubs have a similar trophy haul under his stewardship, both winning one Champions League and one Premier League title in the last five years.

Furthermore, his departure could have huge ramifications for struggling Arsenal, who are said to be unhappy with their current technical director Edu.

The Daily Express have claimed that the Gunners have grown increasingly frustrated with the Brazilian after a string of unsuccessful signings since his appointment just over two years ago.

The report claimed that they were looking at the likes of Marc Overmars, Ralf Rangnick and Michael Emenalo were on their shortlist to replace the former Invincibles’ midfielder, although Edwards could be set to join this list if he is looking for another club.
