BBC Only Connect: Victoria Coren Mitchell’s ‘fear of food’ that means she ends up eating sandwiches on the toilet at dinner parties

Victoria Coren Mitchell – host of BBCs Only Connect – once admitted to taking her own sandwiches to dinner parties and eating them on the loo.

The quiz show host, 46, said she was “frightened of eating in other people’s houses” – particularly in case they cook something interesting.

“I take sandwiches in a bag because people think if you have guests you should impress them with things that are quirky and different,” she said on the Off Menu podcast with Ed Gamble and James Acaster.

The BBC star, who is married to comedian and Peep Show star David Mitchell, continued: “I’m frightened of things that are quirky and different.

“If somebody writes to me and asks, ‘Is there anything you don’t eat?’ What they get back is an essay.

“I will take sandwiches in a bag.”

By contrast, her husband David is “the politest person in the world,” Victoria said.

“He would eat the fork if you said it was part of the meal, anything rather than put someone out,” she continued.

“So I feel I can balance it… I can be his picky wife.”

However, the Only Connect host said she would never eat her own food in front of people.

“I’d say, ‘I’m weirdly completely full already. I’ve had two bites and that was amazing. I’m popping to the loo’ and then I’d quickly have a sandwich,” she explained.

Only Connect is back on BBC Two tonight (Monday, August 23) at 8pm.
