Southend Adventure Island: Six arrested after theme park fight released ‘under investigation’

Six people arrested after a fight at Adventure Island have been released under investigation, police have confirmed.

Essex Police were called to Western Esplanade in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, at around 4.40pm, where a man in his 20s working as a security guard for the theme park had been assaulted.

During the incident, two police officers were also assaulted – with one officer kicked, while the other was hit on the head and pulled by her hair. Thankfully, neither officer sustained any injuries.

Police have now confirmed that six people who were arrested after the disturbance have been released “under investigation”.

It means those arrested are still under active investigation as officers continue to review high-quality CCTV footage provided by Adventure Island and speak to witnesses.

The following arrests were made:

  • A 29-year-old man from Stockwell was arrested on suspicion of assault and affray
  • A 17-year-old boy from London was arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police officer, affray and assault
  • A 17-year-old boy from London was arrested on suspicion of assault and affray
  • A 15-year-old boy from London was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and affray
  • A 15-year-old girl from London was arrested on suspicion of assault and assaulting an emergency worker
  • A 24-year-old man from London was arrested on suspicion of assault and affray

Speaking on the incident yesterday, Essex Police Chief Inspector David Miles said: “This incident understandably caused some alarm locally yesterday, but I can assure the public that despite a number of reports online, no weapons of any kind were used against anyone.

“A security guard at Adventure Island was assaulted but is thankfully recovering well.”

Essex Police Chief Constable BJ Harrington during a pre-planned patrol in Southend yesterday evening during which he spoke with some security guards at Adventure Island.

He added: “As a result of the policing plans we have in place in Southend, we were able to respond to this incident within two minutes of it being reported to us.

“Sadly, as our officers responded to the incident, two were injured as they did their job. Thankfully, however, they were not seriously hurt.

“This again serves to highlight the risks police officers take each day as they go about their role.”
