London Covid cases by borough: 9 areas record rise in weekly infections

L

ondon’s battle against Covid-19 cases appears to be stalling with nine boroughs seeing a rise in weekly infections, official figures reveal on Tuesday.

They show there were 24,162 confirmed cases in the capital in the week to August 4, giving a seven-day rate of 268.4 infections per 100,000 Londoners, down 5.4 per cent on the previous week.

The weekly drop compares to a fall of 9.3 per cent in the seven days to August 3, 13.7 per cent to August 2, and 36.3 per cent to July 27, suggesting the decline in cases is running out of steam.

The official figures show:

* Kingston saw the biggest increase in cases in the week to August 4, up 13.4 per cent, followed by Croydon 7.3 per cent, and Redbridge 5.4 per cent.

* The largest drop was in Bexley, down 18.9 per cent, with Westminster dropping 18.8 per cent and Richmond 16 per cent.

* The highest seven-day rate was in Hammersmith and Fulham at 367.8 infections per 100,000 people, followed by Lambeth on 354.2 and Wandsworth 319.

* The lowest rate was in Enfield at 199.9.

* There were 1,077 coronavirus patients in the capital’s hospitals, as of Monday, down from a third wave peak so far of 1,157 a week earlier, but the figure has remained above 1,000 so far this month. Just over 200 patients are so ill that they are on ventilators.

* On Saturday, 102 Covid patients were admitted to the city’s hospitals.

* A further three deaths, within 28 days of the individuals testing postive for the virus, were announced for the capital on Monday, though, these figures tend to be lower on a Monday as the authorities take time to confirm fatalities.

Health chiefs believe that people gathering to watch Euro 2020 games in June and July may have fuelled the spread of the disease which then declined after schools broke up for the summer holidays, people left the capital to go on breaks, and some individuals disengaged with the testing system amid the “pingdemic”.

They have warned that the third wave could last for several months rather than being a sharp rise and similar fall.

However, coronavirus patients being admitted to hospital are generally less ill and younger than in previous waves.
