Derelict Barnet Toys R Us site could be turned into state of the art TV studio

A Toys R Us site that has stood derelict for three years is on the verge of being built on again as part of Barnet Council’s ambitious Brent Cross regeneration plans.

The site on Tilling Road, which is located on the same industrial park as a large Tesco has been abandoned and boarded up since April 2018 and has become something of an eyesore for local residents.

Since it closed, the site has become a popular area for rough sleeping and fly tipping which has necessitated the erection of fences around the perimeter.

In 2019, a Barnet resident submitted a Freedom of Information request to Barnet Council enquiring as to the future of the site.

They wrote: “Hi I would like to know what’s going on with the ex store has it been bought or will it form part of the Brent Cross Regeneration.”

The Council’s response hinted at grand designs for the derelict toy shop, as they said: “The former Toys R Us site falls within the boundary of the regeneration of Brent Cross Cricklewood and is covered by the outline planning permission (F/04687/14)and masterplan for the development.

“This area falls within Phase 2 and 3 of the regeneration.”

And if these ambitious new plans go ahead, the site could soon be transformed into a state of the art television studio.

A planning application submitted to Barnet Council on July 16 by Brent Cross Studios lays out the grand designs for the area.

It reads: “Formerly an out-of-town retail store for Toys R Us, the site has been unoccupied and unused since approximately April 2018 when Toys R Us fell into administration.

“The site is part of the wider Brent Cross Cricklewood development and is covered by the outline planning permission (F/04687/14)and masterplan for the development. This area falls within Phase 6 of the regeneration.

“This application is for a meanwhile change of use of the space from A1 (retail) to E(g) (industrial) for use as a film/ television studio space with associated indoor and outdoor storage, office and rehearsal spaces.

“The proposal requires minimal physical redevelopment to the site, buildings or external areas.

“Permission is also sought for advertising consent to allow signage changes to the external facades.”

MyLondon has approached Barnet Council for more information on the project.
