London crime: Police officer ‘stabbed by teenager who robbed corner shop and hid in Pret a Manger’

A female police officer was stabbed in the abdomen after two 15-year-old boys tried to rob a corner shop, a court has heard.

The teenagers allegedly armed themselves with knives and put on gloves, face masks, and hooded jackets in a bid to raid the Pimlico Grocery store, in Westminster, on the afternoon of October 4 last year.

Two shop workers were threatened at knife point before running outside and trying to hold the door shut. But the armed boys kicked it off its hinges, realising they were trapped inside, said prosecutor Polly Dyer.

Plainclothes officers Pcs Stephanie Clarke and Leigh Walker, who were on duty in the area, attended the scene and tried to stop one of the boys as the pair left the store.

“(The youth), knife still in hand, moved his arm in a semi-circular motion and stabbed Pc Clarke in the right side of her abdomen,” said Ms Dyer.

“Pc Clarke, not initially realising she had been stabbed, continued to run after the boys until she noticed she was slowing and realised she was bleeding from her side.

“She was taken to hospital and received medical treatment.”

Isleworth Crown Court heard on Tuesday (August 10) the teenagers were found in the toilets of a nearby Pret a Manger branch.

Both boys, who are now 16 and cannot be named because of their age, have pleaded guilty to attempting to rob and possessing a knife. One, from Barking, East London, admits wounding Pc Clarke with intent to resist lawful detention, but denies wounding with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm (GBH).

The other, from Hampshire, denies both charges.

The trial continues.
