The stunning seaside town where so many Londoners own holiday homes the locals have given them a nickname

Londoner holiday homes have always been a point of controversy.

It was revealed recently that the town of Southwold in Suffolk is nicknamed ‘North London On Sea’ due to the influx of rich Londoners who own homes there.

But one stunning seaside town has so many Londoners on the weekends that they have a code word for them.

In Deal, Kent, Londoners are referred to as ‘DFLs’ – Down From London.

Just look at that blue sea

An Urban Dictionary definition gives an example of someone using the phrase on the phone.

It says: “Hi Darling, I’m just sat on the train. It’s packed with lots of DFLs with their Waitrose bags and beards.”

Londoners seem to have made a bad name for themselves in this seaside town.

Not only do they buy property but only use it on the weekends, they are apparently notorious for complaining about noise pollution. Eek!

It’s not hard to see why so many Londoners want to buy houses here.

The town is described as ‘quintessentially English’

The town of Deal is stunning, with quirky independent, stunning castles and a classic seafront with pastel coloured houses.

It is described as a ‘quintessentially English seaside town’, and a quick look through Instagram shows you why so many love it.

The pebbly beach has incredible sunsets and views of the English Channel. Cute fisherman’s cottages nestle in its winding streets, and don’t leave without popping in for a pint at a local traditional pub on the high street.

With high-speed trains on top of all the town has to offer, Deal was voted one of the best places to buy a second home for Londoners.

But as the second-home trend sweeps Kent, it’s not just Deal that uses the phrase ‘DFL’. The nickname is well known by locals in nearby Kent towns like Whitstable.

One tweeted: “I’m guessing Whitstable native is ours, or a DFL (down from London) if you own a holiday home here.”

Another Twitter user wrote: “We have a DFL (down from London) viewing our flat tomorrow….” with a laughing GIF.
