Multiple people have been injured after a roof was ripped off a double-decker bus travelling in the popular beach holiday destination of Mumbles, in Wales.

South Wales Police say emergency services are at the scene of an incident which involved an open-top bus colliding with a tree.

Pictures show damage to a Cymru Coaster bus, which travels around the city giving people views of the bay from its open top roof.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “Emergency services are at the scene of a collision which involved an open-top bus colliding with a tree on Mumbles Road, near Knab Rock.

“There are a number of injuries, none of which are life-threatening or life-changing.”

Bus operator First Cymru confirmed the vehicle involved was one from its fleet, Wales Online reports.

Pictures from the scene show damage to a section of roof at the front of the seaside tour bus, which appears to have smashed into a roadside tree.

A First Cymru spokesperson said: “We can confirm one of our vehicles operating the Swansea to Mumbles service was involved in a collision earlier this afternoon.

“Following the incident the operator immediately implemented its emergency procedures and sent representatives to the scene to provide support to those involved and the emergency services.

“We will work closely with the emergency services as part of our investigation.”

Mumbles Road was closed in both directions following the collision on Tuesday afternoon, as the Welsh Air Ambulance landed at the scene.

The public was being advised by police to avoid the area and take an alternative routes.

Swansea Council leader Cllr Rob Stewart said: “Very sorry to hear of the incident in Mumbles with the open top bus.

“Road is currently closed. Police are on the scene and thankfully have reported no major injuries. Best wishes for everyone to make a full recovery”.

The incident follows a bus tragedy in central London earlier in the day.

A woman aged in her 30s was killed and three people were injured after a crash between two double-decker buses at busy London Victoria station.

The pedestrian was walking outside the train station during rush hour when she was struck at around 8.25am.

Two other injured pedestrians were taken to hospital, while a third was discharged at the scene.

And in another incident in the West Midlands on Tuesday, a woman was been left seriously injured after a bus ploughed through a shelter.

Emergency services were called after the vehicle smashed into a bus stop in Walsall at lunchtime.

A woman, who had been inside the bus shelter at the time, received advanced trauma care before being rushed to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

A second pedestrian was treated for minor injuries while three further patients, including the bus driver, were assessed by paramedics and discharged at the scene.
