St Albans and Hitchin crowned two of the best London commuter ‘towns’

For London dwellers, the commute can be exhausting.

Packed Tube trains, long journey times and, most importantly, no 4G en route can leave you feeling deflated when Friday comes around.

So it’s understandable that after a few years at the grind, city workers have migrated north to Hertfordshire’s green and pleasant lands.

Kubie Gold Associates has drawn up a list of the ten best places to live in to commute to London and Herts is well represented.

Hitchin comes in at fifth place while St Albans is eighth. According to the estate agent, Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire is the best commuter town to live in.

Hitchin

This town’s quaint centre, cobbled streets and array of independent shops and restaurants are a hit with families. Don’t forget about the area’s stunning lavender fields too.

Regular trains from Hitchin station take just 33 minutes to get to St Pancras International though single tickets are on the pricey side, at about £17.90.

Hitchin’s schools are highly rated too such as Hitchin Boys’ and Girls’ School academies that received an ‘outstanding’ from an Ofsted inspection.

St Albans

Victoria Street, St Albans

One in five people living in St Albans commute to London and, with just a 20-minute train journey (air-conditioned!) to St Pancras, it’s easy to see why. A standard single train ticket is usually about £13.20.

St Albans’ rich history, stunning Cathedral that was once visited by the Magna Carta and Georgian homes make it an ideal commuter spot. Did you know St Albans used to be the capital of England?

The first settlement here dates back to the 1st century BC when a Celtic tribe built its capital at a place they called Verlamion, which translates to “place above the marsh”.

Nowadays there are lots of brilliant private and state schools to choose from too, making it a great place to bring up children.
