Where?
Forest Gate in east London. Don’t get it mixed up with leafy Forest Hill in southeast London. The E7 enclave counts West and East Ham, Stratford, Barking and Leytonstone as next-door neighbours.
Why now?
Unpretentious and diverse, this bit of Newham has a strong sense of community and a rapidly changing scene. The 35-year-old TV presenter and Instagram darling Laura Jackson has lived here for six years (her double-fronted Victorian house has been featured in The Modern House, natch). Watch out for the rest of the priced-out thirtysomething ex-Hackney, Bow, Dalston and Canonbury crew heading this way.
Forest Gate has a surprisingly star-spangled past: Stevie Wonder, the Who and Nina Simone played at the Upper Cut Club on Woodgrange Road in the Sixties.
