Edinburgh flights to London are five times cheaper than getting a train

It is no secret that public transport prices are consistently on the rise, and many customers are taking to social media site Twitter to complain about this issue.

So, how much does it really cost to visit Edinburgh, when travelling from different parts of the UK and beyond?

London to Edinburgh – Plane vs train

Travelling to Edinburgh by aircraft is becoming increasingly more popular, as the train prices seem to hike up by the minute.

At the time of writing, the four and a half hour journey from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley is a whopping £166 for economy travel, via train.

For a more luxury feeling in the same mode of transport, it is £260.50 for first-class service in the London North Eastern Railway service.

Having travelled to London and back from Edinburgh personally, it is a mostly peaceful journey, with wonderful views and the first-class service is unmatched.

However, it could be considered exceptionally overpriced for its actual worth, and is most likely the reason why many people are opting for the more environmentally-damaging option of flying.

On the other hand, an Easyjet flight from London to Edinburgh is as cheap as £33, and lasts only an hour and 15 minutes, in comparison to the long-haul of the train times.

The only downside to flying to Edinburgh would be the race through security that many of us will have less-than-fond memories of; however, this is a small mental price to pay for the cheapness of just over £30.

Travelling to Edinburgh from other parts of the UK

For some extremely baffling reason, travelling from Manchester to Edinburgh via train is only around 50 quid cheaper than the London to Edinburgh pricing.

The cheapest train from Manchester Piccadilly to Edinburgh is £115.80, with first class pricing at £148.10.

Although it is closer to Edinburgh than Manchester by a considerable amount, the train from Leeds to Edinburgh is still an expensive journey, at £112.30.

To put this into perspective, a plane journey from Manchester to Edinburgh lasts around the same time as a train journey thanks to a stop off in Heathrow, but is only £37 one-way.

Leeds to Edinburgh is around the same duration, but slightly more expensive at £41.

So, when it comes to public transport to Scotlands capital, there is a choice of sacrifice to make: money or the environment?

With thousands of people travelling for business everyday, there has to be a more efficient way to travel around the UK that is cost-effective, and doesn’t wreck the planet.
