The Mirror sent a reporter to stay at the hotel.

He wrote: ” The entrance hall, which continued the cinema theme with its washed-out carpets and ‘two Budweiser for £5’ posters covering the walls.

A glance out of the window onto the strange central smoking courtyard revealed a trifecta of big night in-implements – a drugs baggy, discharged laughing gas canisters and a condom wrapper.

“People variously complain that they smell of weed, they’re dirty, they would have been “worn and dated in the ’70s”, they’re strewn with used knickers and leggings.

One of the most recent reviews left -for the New Street hotel said: Stayed for 1 night (thank god). Did not look anything like the photos. It was cold/dirty and damp, there was even mould on the windows. I would not recommend. There’s not much more to write. I believe I’ve made my point pretty clear. AVOID”.

BirminghamLive reporter Graham Young stayed at the Birmingham Britannia back in 2017 after a visitor dubbed it as being the worst hotel in the UK at the time.

Thereviewer said of his visit; “Once the door opens, you can tell why some people take a dislike to the place.

“There is a tangible smell in the corridors that you could imagine would be more oppressive on a hotter, more humid day.”

However, he was impressed with his room adding: “To my utter astonishment, my room had recently been refurbished, and I could not fault it for cleanliness. From expecting to be holed up in a total dive, I could not have been more surprised by my room.”
