The new East London bar that serves dog-friendly cocktails

A dog-friendly cocktail bar has opened in Hackney Wick – and it serves up ‘doggy versions’ of classic drinks.

Located on Smeed Road, Fish Island, After Bark is the latest addition to Barkney Wick, a community centre designed with dogs and their owners in mind.

The East London space is home to a dog daycare, dog-friendly café and onsite behavioural and training classes for pups.

Now, it has a bar which serves up ‘puptails’, a number of fun and healthy ‘doggy versions’ of classic cocktails.

Jamie Swan, founder of Barkney Wick and After Bark, said: “We have very carefully put together the puptail menu without using any preservatives or any ingredients that may be harmful to pups, such as lime, avocado, sugar, salt, chocolate etc.

“Our staff are all experienced dog carers which gives us that additional edge over bars and restaurants offering dog treats who are simply dog-friendly.”

Howlapaw Sling

Named after the notorious Singapore Sling, the Howlapaw Sling offers your pup a healthy alternative that’s totally alcohol-free.

Unlike the gin-based original, this pup-friendly version is made from raw carrot!

All the dog drinks are also served with edible coasters, from Lick&Mix, a homemade dog treat company that uses human-grade ingredients.

The national drink of Brazil and summertime favourite in the UK, the Caipirinha is much loved for its sweet and refreshing taste.

After Dark’s similarly named Capawinha seems to be barking up the same tree.

Made from apples, this pale puptail is likely to be similarly revitalising for your dog.

Fish Island Iced Tea

This one doesn’t have a dog-related name but it does pay homage to the infamous Long Island Iced Tea, as well as the venue’s location on Fish Island.

Unlike the original classic cocktail, the Fish Island Iced Tea is the opposite of lethal – the herbal mix is actually meant to be good for your pup!

It’s a blend of rose petals, devils claw, lime flower, skullcap, orange flower, astralagus and lavender.

Dog owners also have their pick of a range of alcoholic cocktails of their own. Just like the puptails on offer, many of these have pup-inspired names – think Barkarita”, Apawrol Spritz, Bloodhound Mary and more.

The venue is also available as a pop up for events and at bars and restaurants.
