Comedian and actress Caroline Aherne narrated the show in her iconic Mancunian accent for over three years before tragically passing away to lung cancer in April 2016.

The TV star was actually born in Ealing, West London, before moving up north to Wythenshawe, Manchester where she would find her calling.

Everyone’s favourite wit Mrs Merton

Caroline began on the Manchester comedy circuit and specialised in character imitation with acts like Sister Mary Immaculate (an Irish nun) and Mitzi Goldberg (a country singer).

She’d develop into the much loved Mrs Merton who had her own chat show with real celebrities.

Her guests included Kriss Akabusi, Edwina Currie, Carol Vorderman and Jeremy Clarkson with whom Caroline used the utmost of her wit to mock them.

One famous line to Debbie McGee included: “What first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?”

Her repertoire was endless and Caroline would also appear on BBC’s The Fast Show – a sketch show with loads of catchphrases and gags.

Caroline would be an integral part of the Royle Family where she starred alongside Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston, as their daughter Denise Royle.

After a few more features on one-off specials of the show Caroline would voice Gogglebox until she died in 2016.

She had spoken publicly in 2014 that battling lung cancer and also stated how she and her brother were born with cancer of the retina.

Her humour lifted her up even in adversity as she said: “My mum told us that only special people get cancer.

“I must be very special as I’ve had it in my lungs and bladder as well.”
