One in five people admit to being caught out by catfishing

3

The practice of “catfishing” – luring someone into a relationship by creating a fake identity online – has caught out one in five people, according to a new survey.

While 20 per cent of people overall polled by BetMinded said they had been catfished, 38 per cent of those aged between 25 and 34 said they had fallen for a fake profile.

More people in London than anywhere else in the country admitted to having fallen for the online trick, with 38 per cent of respondents having been catfished. In Wales the figure was 27 per cent and in the Midlands 24 per cent. East Anglia (23 per cent) and the North West (21 per cent) also reported higher levels of catfishing than the national figure of 20 per cent.

The lowest area for catfishing in the UK was Northern Ireland, with just 10 per cent of people saying that they had fallen for the trick. Scotland (12 per cent), the South East (13 per cent) and Yorkshire (14 per cent) also recorded relatively low figures.

Meanwhile, one in four people (26 per cent) admitted to lying about themselves on a first date, with that total breaking down to 29 per cent of men compared with 23 per cent of women.

The younger generation admitted to being the biggest liars, with a third of 18 to 24-year-olds saying they had bent the truth on a date and 36 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds. This figure drops to 30 per cent for 35 to 44-year-olds, 23 per cent for those aged 45-54, and 13 per cent for people aged 55 and above.

A BetMinded spokesperson said: “More catfishing is happening in the UK than you might think with one in five reporting they’ve fallen for a fake online profile, rising to one in three for young people.

“Online daters in London and Wales need to be the most aware of who they’re talking to with the regions reporting the highest number of catfishes in the UK, while Scotland and Northern Ireland are the most honest.”
