West Ham United’s stance over Kurt Zouma made clear as transfer talks ‘restart’

Kurt Zouma’s future at Chelsea remains uncertain, with the France international now into the final two years of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

The 26-year-old, who has been with the Blues since January 2014, is a target for West Ham United, with David Moyes looking to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new season.

However, the Hammers are now reportedly looking elsewhere for centre-back options, with Get Football News France saying that the east London club have ‘restarted’ talks with Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car.

In the report, though, it also claims that Zouma remains the ‘priority’ defensive signing for Moyes this month.

Talks are said to have restarted with Caleta-Car, but West Ham have not opened negotiations with the French club over a deal for the 24-year-old Croatia international.

Caleta-Car has recently entered the final two years of his deal at the Orange Velodrome, meaning the French outfit’s last chance to generate a sizeable fee for his services could be in the coming weeks.

But it seems as if West Ham still want Zouma over the Croatian, with the Frenchman seemingly not fundamental in Thomas Tuchel’s plans going forward.

“Kurt comes from a very different situation,” Tuchel said of Zouma, who played 45 minutes in Chelsea’s 2-1 pre-season friendly win against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

“Kurt was part of the team for half a year, I know him exactly, what I can demand from him, what he can give to the team.

“He was part of a very successful half a season.

“He was a very lively part of it, maybe not in minutes but I want to remember he was a crucial member of the team that won 2-0 against Atletico, for example.

“So when he was needed, and he had some tough decisions against him, but when he delivered. So the situation isn’t comparable to Ruben [Loftus-Cheek].

“Ruben needs to show now everything in some weeks if that’s possible. For Kurt, it’s different as I know what he can deliver. It was his first 45 minutes of the season and from now on, we go.”
