Superhero Hollywood blockbuster starring Scarlett Johansson was shot in East London

Barking and Dagenham council has revealed a Hollywood film was shot in the local area.

The crew of the Marvel smash-hit Black Widow were based in Dagenham, at the Londoneast-UK business park, for six weeks over the summer of 2019.

The cast and crew were hosted by Barking and Dagenham ’s film office, Film LBBD.

Black Widow is an American superhero film starring Scarlett Johnsson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Rachel Weisz.

The film is the 24th in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and premiered in July 2021. Scarlett Johansson plays ‘Black Widow’ who goes on a solo spy adventure.

The location manager for the film, Aurelia Thomas, said: “It was an absolute pleasure filming in Dagenham back in 2019 and Lisa, Jayne and the LBBD team were extremely helpful!”

The Head of Film at Barking and Dagenham, Lisa Dee, said she ‘feels proud to have been part of the production of such a female-centred film’.

She said: “This is the third time Marvel have filmed with Film LBBD in Dagenham, ahead of the new studios being built. This is a great example of global production ‘choosing’ to film in Barking and Dagenham.

“Black Widow was particularly special for us to work on, the director Cate Shortland and production team had a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve, and we were so pleased to be able to assist them in delivering that.

“Personally, having a female cast and an amazing director at the helm – I was only sad not to be casted as a stand-in widow (next time maybe!)”

Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, councillor Darren Rodwell, said: “Barking and Dagenham used to be famous for making cars, now we are the Hollywood of the capital.”

While the film was being produced in the area, the production team recruited a former student of Dagenham Park School, Inam Choudhury, to work on the filming shoot as a trainee marshal.

By day three Inam was promoted to production assistant and continued to work on Black Widow for the rest of the shoot.
